National Liberation and Culture by Amilcar L. Cabral
Amilcar L. Cabral (1921-1973) was an agronomist, nationalist leader, theoretician, and founder and secretary-general of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), who helped lead Guinea-Bissau to independence. On January 20, 1973, he was assassinated outside his home in Conakry by Guinea-native agents of Portuguese authorities, where his organization had established its headquarters. In September of that year the PAIGC unilaterally declared Guinea-Bissau’s independence, a status formally achieved on September 10, 1974. This following text was originally delivered by Amilcar L. Cabral on February 20, 1970.
The New Intellectual, Tricontinental Institute for Social Research
From Tricontinental: “The New Intellectual provides a short assessment of Castro’s Battle of Ideas and the task that lies before new intellectuals in our current political context in order to build a world where our productive capacity enriches all of us. It is essential that we participate in the conversation about what a transformed society would look like. Once you have organised people to push for a new world system, what is the policy framework that needs to be adopted? It is here that intellectuals must put their heart and soul into action.”
