JOSE CARLOS MARIÁTEGUI: MARXISM OF THE SOUTH
STUDY BLOCKS: PHILOSOPHY, HISTORY
Summary
José Carlos Mariátegui is one of Latin America’s most profound but overlooked thinkers. A self-taught journalist, social scientist, and activist from Peru, he was the first to emphasize that those fighting for the revolutionary transformation of society must adapt classical Marxist theory to the particular conditions of Latin America. He also stressed that indigenous peoples must take an active, if not leading, role in any revolutionary struggle.
As the crisis of global capitalism intensifies and as people rise up all over the world against imperialist and neo-colonial control, there is no better time to take up the study of Mariátegui. Join scholar Marc Becker for a lecture and discussion on Mariátegui’s life, work, and political and theoretical contributions.

MARIATEGUI: Selected Essays (Tricontinental Institute for Social Research)
José Carlos Mariátegui (1894-1930) is one of the most important Marxist intellectuals and communist militants in Latin America. He brought Marxism into a deep and enduring conversation with the concrete conditions of Latin American – specifically Andean – social life; and he developed a deeply ethical foundation for the growth of Communist politics. This volume, produced by six publishing houses in six languages, collects three of Mariátegui’s texts along with an introduction by the Brazilian Marxist intellectual Florestan Fernandes (1920-1995) and a preface by the collective from the Escuela José Carlos Mariátegui (Argentina).
